Pool Finishes Compared: Plaster vs. Pebble vs. Quartz
Standard plaster (marcite)
The most economical finish and still the most common. White plaster gives the classic light-blue water look. Expect roughly 7–15 years of life — shorter in high-UV, hard-water, or year-round-use markets.
Plaster is the lowest cost up front but the shortest-lived, so it can be the most expensive over a 25-year horizon if you resurface more often.
Quartz finishes
Quartz-aggregate blends add crushed quartz for better stain resistance, a richer color range, and a 10–15+ year lifespan. It is the popular middle option: noticeably more durable than plaster without jumping to premium pricing.
Pebble finishes
Pebble surfaces (such as PebbleTec and Pebble Sheen) are the most durable and stain-resistant, typically lasting 15–25 years. They cost the most up front but usually win on cost-per-year, especially in harsh-climate markets.
Rule of thumb: choose plaster for tight budgets and short ownership, quartz for balance, pebble if you are keeping the home long-term or live in a high-wear climate.
